WordPress Benefits From Yahoo-Tumblr Deal
WordPress appears to be reaping early benefits from Yahoo’s recent purchase of the blogging site Tumblr. Normally, WordPress receives 400 to 600 posts per hour coming in from Tumblr. But, according to WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg, ever since Yahoo’s announcement that it was buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion, those numbers have gone through the roof, at times reaching over 72,000 per hour.
It now looks pretty certain that Yahoo has pulled off a deal to buy Tumblr for 1.1B. The relationship between WordPress and Tumblr has always been pretty friendly: Tumblr’s own blog used to be on WP, WordPress.com supports Tumblr as a Publicize option alongside Twitter and Facebook, our Akismet team sends them daily emails of splogs on the service, and there’s healthy import and export traffic both ways. (Imports have actually spiked on the rumors even though it’s Sunday: normally we import 400-600 posts an hour from Tumblr, last hour it was over 72,000.) Source: Matt MullenwegMullenweg was quick to point out that, while interesting, the import numbers should be kept in perspective. After all, Tumblr is home to over 100 million blogs and adds 75 million blog posts per day, so 72,000 posts in an hour is a small drop in a very big sea. In his post, Mullenweg also goes on to share his thoughts on the future of web publishing platforms, predicting good things are ahead. It is an interesting read, as are many of the comments from his readers.
